About

Indigo + Salt

Blu is for the indigo trade that brought the British to Indian shores and salt is for the salt tax that Mahatma Gandhi used to galvanize the people of India to fight for their freedom.

Blu Salt signifies our peaceful resistance to how luxury is defined today.

Philosophy

MINDFUL PRODUCTION – BUSINESS WITH A CONSCIENCE

We are indebted to the people who created our brand and products, and we are equally indebted to the global community that supports us.

MINDFUL CONSUMPTION – BUY LESS, DEMAND MORE

We owe it to our customers to produce products of exceptional quality, utility and beauty. It is the only way we should earn our income, and the only way we can consume intelligently as a society.

Our values define us. Our responsibility, as a collective, is in building a business model that incorporates social responsibility end-to-end to serve our collaborators, customers and society equally.

Design

Our designs are highly influenced by Dieter Rams’ 10 Principles of Good Design.

Principles of Blu Salt design:

Intelligent simplicity: Each product should be surprisingly unassuming, surprisingly useful

Understated beauty: Every design should be a haiku - pared down to its most essential lines

Contemplative living: Each product should leave the world a little better for having been created

Inspiration

The people behind the names

Sharon Clutch

Professor Sharon Oster is a pre-eminent economics & strategy professor at the Yale School of Management. Her razor-sharp mind and self-possessed femininity are hallmarks of her singular style.

Ann Tote

Dr. Aanshu (Ann) Shah  was the first woman physician to join her practice in Las Vegas, and rose to become its first female partner as well. We couldn’t imagine a better representative to name the ultimate woman’s work tote after.

Rama Wallet

Mrs. Buddharaju Rama balanced motherhood with a career long before work-life balance became part of our lexicon. Her quiet, unwavering support of her family was the inspiration behind our wallet design.

Jyo Weekender

Ms. Jyothsna (Jyo) Buddharaju is a rare woman – fiercely independent and self-reliant, she has trekked the Himalayas, backpacked through Iceland and rows for an award-winning team in LA. Reminiscent of the free spirit that loves travel, we’ve name the Weekender after her.

Raju Laptop Sleeve

Dr. Rajiv (Raju) Shah's encouragement and feedback were critical to making the laptop sleeve as functional and beautiful as it is. Mr. B.L.N. Raju was also an early supporter of Blu Salt. With both of them cheering us on, how could we not return the favor?

Materials

RPET

Recycled Polyethylene Terephtalate comes from plastic that has already had a prior life, such as plastic drink bottles. We have worked carefully to create RPET fabric that not only feels fantastic to touch, but is also durably water & stain repellent.

We use C6 DWR treatment - we realize that it's not the ideal solution, but until we can find a similarly reliable environmentally safe alternative, we are using the best balance we can find between utility and sustainability.

ORGANIC COTTON

Organic cotton is cotton grown in an environment where no pesticides, chemical fertilizers or herbicides have been used for a minimum of 3 years. Dyes used to color this fabric are also eco-friendly & azo free.

UP-CYCLED SILK

Rather than use virgin silk, we create our own silk using high-end dupion silk remnants from the home furnishings industry. As with the cotton, the dyes for silk are also eco-friendly & azo-free.

Factories

We are fortunate to have found an exceptional team of collaborators who have been instrumental in creating, developing and building Blu Salt.

VIETNAM: THE WALLET & HANDBAG FACTORY

Established: 2001

Employees: 300

A few of our favorite things in Ho Chi Minh City: Breakfast at Propaganda Café, L’Uisine

Products: Rama Wallet, Sharon Clutch, Ann Tote, Raju Laptop Sleeve, Jyo Weekender

In the heart of vibrant Ho Chi Minh City is one of the factories of our finished goods manufacturer. Surrounded by song birds, the factory premises offer a respite in an otherwise bustling city. In the epic search for the highest quality handbag and wallet manufacturer, we learnt about our manufacturer through word of mouth. They have worked with a range of luxury and sustainable brands and we are excited to collaborate with them.

INDIA: THE PACKAGING FACTORY

Location: Kolkata

Established: 2006

Employees: 35

A few of our favorite things in Kolkata: Saffron ice-cream from the Royal Bengal Club, Durga Puja

Products: Yin Lunch bag, Zen Jewelry bag, Yang Drawstring bag

Nestled in the old capital of the British Raj, our packaging factory is the latest off-shoot of a venerable name in cotton yarn and fabric production in India. With nearly 100 years of experience in sourcing and producing high-quality cotton yarn, we were thrilled to work with their newest division which focuses on bag production using sustainable natural fabrics. Blu Salt would not exist today without their initial support.

Social Responsibility

Chimnaya Organization for Rural Development

10% of Blu Salt's profits to CORD, Chinmaya Organization for Rural Development, a non-profit dedicated to supporting rural communities in South Asia.

We chose this charity for two reasons:

  1. CORD empowers its beneficiaries to become independent of it.
  2. CORD is totally operated by volunteers, and therefore every dollar invested in it goes directly to the people in need
